In conjunction with the prosecution’s indictment of the defendant, the court proceeds with the trial as follows

The defendant’s opening statement
After the prosecutor has completed the opening statement, the chief judge asks the defendant whether he/she accepts the facts as stated in the indictment document, to which the defendant then responds unless he/she exercises the right not to make a statement.
